Too Big to Ignore - Twitter in 2009

Last year, Twitter was emerging as the next big thing. Today, it is the big thing. And tomorrow it's going to be even bigger. When the "year in review" headlines in the world of online business are written in December, you can bet your bottom dollar that Twitter will be part of them. It's the story of the year thus far and there's no reason to believe that it's going to slow down any time soon.

Oprah told her viewers about Twitter. That's huge. Huge. Oprah Winfrey has long commanded an army of viewers and fans who have consistently followed her lead. Just look at her book club selections and cross-check that information against a list of recent best-sellers if you have any doubts.

Ashton Kutcher made it to a million followers. A million. Sharing a photo of Demi Moore's rump probably accounted for a chunk of that following, but the fact that he broke the million follower mark--and the press accompanied with it--increased Twitters' exposure to a new demographic.

Meanwhile, state county and local authorities are using Twitter to keep citizens up to date about emergencies and key government functions. News networks are Tweeting up a storm. Twitter isn't just becoming popular. It's becoming integral to the way folks are using the web and that makes it important.

You might be one of those who haven't really seen any obvious advantage to Twitter participation. Perhaps you've dismissed it as a fad. At some point, it's possible that treating Twitter as an afterthought might be the same as ignoring the idea of email because you don't necessarily like it.

This is the time to start digging into Twitter. The growth has been phenomenal and will probably continue. If you're not part of the action, you're on the outside of a massive and growing opportunity. Twitter will be the online story of 2009 and we all know that staying on top of trends and major changes is integral to online business success.

Give it a shot. When Oprah, Ashton, Anderson Cooper, and several million other people are all making something art of their daily lives, it only makes sense to develop an understanding of the tool and how you can use it to your advantage.
